Embedding principles of sustainable development

Sustainability East and its regional partners have commissioned a document from independent consultants which advises on how sustainable development could be embedded in the new institutional landscape in the east of England being created by the Sub national review of Economic development.

The document is helping to shape discussions with members of key regional organisations and once a more formal position paper has been finalised, it will be published here.

In addition to this regional work, a local pilot focusing on embedding sustainable development principles into the Greater Norwich Economic Strategy, is also reaching completion. The learning from this pilot has been fed into the regional project and the resulting paper will also be published here.

Sustainability East: Welcome

Sustainability East is the East of England's independent sustainable development champion

We bring together experts from across the region to bring sustainable development to the heart of policy making in the East of England. We do this by carrying out critical analyses of policy instruments and spending programmes and acting as 'critical friend' to regional bodies whose decisions impact significantly on the economic, environmental and social development of the region. We also promote debate on sustainable development issues and, where appropriate, commission research to support better evidence-based debate and policy-making.

Our vision is that public, private and voluntary organisations in the East of England contribute to delivery of an enhanced quality of life for present and future generations, without compromising the natural resources and environmental assets that we currently enjoy.

2008 marked the 10 year anniversary of Sustainability East. During that time, we have achieved significant breakthroughs on key issues affecting the region's sustainability including, but not limited to, water resource management, renewable energy generation and climate change adaptation. Currently, the group is working with its partners on how sustainable development issues can be fully embedded in the East of England, post SNR
