Sustainability-East
Champions of Sustainability!

Sustainability East is the East of England's independent sustainable development champion.

We work with policy makers, local government, public agencies and private business to help embed sustainable development in the region and beyond. We do this by commissioning research, hosting conferences, supporting education and acting as a candid friend

About Sustainability East

Sustainability East is the East of England's independent sustainable development champion

We are one of a family of regional champion bodies charged by Government to work closely with regional agencies and local authorities . We work with the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) who recognise and support the important role we play advising on and assessing regional performance on sustainable development.

We bring together people from the region with relevant experience and expertise across disciplines, to explore issues, challenge current practice, raise awareness, change perceptions, and act as 'critical friend' to regional bodies in the integration of economic, environmental and social policies, with the overall aim of enhancing the quality of life of all who now live or work in the Region and of future generations.

We carry out critical analyses of policy instruments and spending programmes. We seek to influence strategic documents, major plans and those decisions which have an impact on the economic, environmental and social development of the region. We also promote debate on sustainable development issues, and where appropriate commission research (including action research) to support better evidence-based debate and policy-making.

Within this context, our Mission is:

‘To be an independent, innovative champion for sustainable development in the East of England’

In pursuing our Mission, we will challenge and influence policy and action to advocate the integration of social, economic and environmental agendas. In doing so our activities will encompass:

  • Advice: advising regional bodies, policy makers and opinion formers on mainstreaming sustainability
  • Advocacy: promoting sustainable development as a policy making framework
  • Strategic challenge: critically and constructively evaluating the progress of regional bodies towards sustainability.
